What is Internet Marketing?

Internet marketing is the process of using the World Wide Web (‘the Web’) to market products and services. Internet marketing includes:

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the process of improving the visibility of a Web site through SEO (Search Engine Optimization), PPC advertising (Pay Per Click advertising) (also known as paid placement) and paid inclusion. In the world of Internet marketing some commentators tend to define SEO as being solely about organic search and SEM as being about PPC advertising. Since professional marketers would include sales, press relations, advertising, events and so forth as all falling under marketing,

I consider SEM as the umbrella that covers SEO and PPC advertising. In this book, I will also describe other methods of using the Internet to market products and services by using e-mail marketing and social media marketing. Throughout the book I refer to products and services, however most of the concepts and techniques can be equally well applied to marketing charities, non-commercial organizations or political candidates. In fact they can be applied to virtually anything.
